The True Guardians of Nature

The Aegean, with its azure shores and fertile lands, is home to countless forms of life. From endemic species to the ancient legacy of olive trees, this biodiversity shapes the spirit of the region. Protecting it ensures that the Aegean’s rare beauty and ecological balance are carried forward into the future.

ECOLOGY

The Science of Life and Environment

Ecology is the science devoted to exploring the connections between living organisms and their surroundings. It touches many related fields, including botany, zoology, microbiology and physiology. At its core lie the essential dynamics that influence every form of life. By observing both habitats and the interactions within them, ecology offers insight into the lives we share this planet with, revealing the balance that supports all existence.

BIODIVERSITY

Life in All Its Variety

Life on Earth takes shape in endless variety. While millions of species have been recognised, it is believed far more await discovery. This diversity is the true wealth of life. From clean water and fertile land to fresh air and food, each essential element depends on living systems. Fungi, plants, animals and countless other organisms create this delicate equilibrium, forming the most precious treasure of our planet.

Plants

Plants, the silent supporters of life, enrich the soil, cleanse the air and play a vital role within ecosystems. In Türkiye, trees such as poplar, oak, pine and acorn varieties contribute to forestry.

Animals

When one species fades, the balance of life is altered. Each is essential to continuity. In Türkiye, trout, sea bass and mullet sustain fishing, while sheep, goats and cattle support livestock.

Ecosystem

The sustainability of ecosystems relies on the diversity and wellbeing of species. Each plays a vital role in harmony and has a right to exist. Protecting them safeguards the balance of life.

What Is an Endemic Plant?

Endemic plants are species that grow only in a specific part of the world. In Türkiye, examples include anthemis ammophila, Serik pear, salvia smyrnaea and Bodrum tulip, each reflecting the unique character of its native landscape.

Salvia Smyrnaea

Growing on the hilltops of the Bodrum Peninsula, salvia smyrnaea is valued for its intense aroma and medicinal qualities. With grey-green leaves and a rare pattern of growth, this plant faces the risk of endangerment if not harvested with care.

Allium Bodrensis

The allium bodrensis flourishes on rocky slopes, blooming in the early months of spring. Reaching a height of 10 to 30 centimetres, this rare plant is found across Bodrum and its surrounding landscapes.

Colias Crocea

The Dark Clouded Yellow (Colias crocea) lives up to its majestic name with a brilliance of colour that stands out in every flight. A member of the Pieridae family, it inhabits woodland, grassland and open areas across Muğla’s southern shores.

Maniola Halicarnassus

Formed in isolation during the last Ice Age, maniola Halicarnassus emerged as a species apart on Nisyros Island and the Bodrum Peninsula. Endemic to Türkiye, it now survives solely on the Bodrum Peninsula, marking it as uniquely local.

Iphiclides Podalirius

Known for its striking black and white stripes, iphiclides podalirius is also called Scarce Swallowtail or Sail Swallowtail. It’s often found around fruit trees as well as acacia and judas trees, thriving across regions with a Mediterranean climate.

Charadrius Dubius

A small member of the Charadriidae family, charadrius dubius is named for the white rings around its eyes. Active and agile, this migratory bird is most often found in wetlands. In Muğla, it appears during the spring and summer months.

Pancratium Maritimum

Pancratium maritimum flourishes along coastal sands, its tall stems crowned with delicate white blooms. The petals open with the morning light and close again by evening. Muğla is among the regions where this graceful plant is most widely found.

Protecting Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Nature

  • Share knowledge about protecting nature, the importance of biodiversity and the threat of extinction, encouraging awareness among those around you.
  • Reduce pollution on our shared planet and remind those who cause harm of their responsibility.
  • Reduce the use of plastics, which can take up to 500 years to decompose and, once entering seas and oceans, threaten marine life and the planet’s future, and ensure all waste is recycled.
  • Support biodiversity by choosing fruit and vegetables in their natural season.
  • Select organic and ecological alternatives to pesticides, detergents and chemical products whenever possible.
  • Avoid overfishing and hunting practices that place species at risk.
  • Reduce energy consumption that damages the environment, such as reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Choose reusable items instead of single-use products.
  • Protect water resources.

Nature Protection with Global Standards

The protection of plant life, endemic species and ecosystems is a priority we hold with care. We adhere to the guidelines of IUCN and CITES, closely monitoring the criteria and hunting maps concerning endangered wildlife.
